Alopecia

Alopecia areata is a common autoimmune disease that results in hair loss on the scalp and any other parts of the body. Alopecia areata, as a rule, is rarely associated with any other external or internal medical problems.  It occurs in males and females of all ages. Alopecia areata usually starts with one or more small, round, smooth bald patches on the scalp and can progress to total scalp hair loss (alopecia totalis) or complete body hair loss (alopecia universalis).

It’s not yet perfectly understood what cause alopecia areata. For some reasons, follicles stop producing visible hair, resulting in smooth bald patches that appear overnight. Researchers are trying to determine what triggers the disease. Some possible triggers are:

  • Genetic tendencies
  • Long illness
  • Exposure to chemicals
  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • Extreme stress
  • Pregnancy
